Abstract
As a program that develops students’ creativity in community service, the 2022 Matching Fund Program implemented by Universitas Slamet Riyadi Surakarta (Unisri) Solo produced 10 recommendations that led to improvements in the management of Wayang Orang (WO) Sriwedari Solo. One of these is providing an innovation grant to translate the Wayang Orang Script, which is the focus of the researcher in this thesis. This research aimed to: (1) Analyze the acceptability of the translated Wayang Orang scripts by MBKM Matching Fund students of Universitas Slamet Riyadi, and (2) Identify the types of errors found in the translations categorized as "less acceptable" using the Surface Strategy Taxonomy. The study focuses on the translations of scripts Bandung Nagasewu, Wiji Sejati, Semar Mbangun Kahyangan, Gathutkaca Krama, Anggoda Balik, Harjunasasrabahu Mokswa, Ontran-Ontran Wirata, Supala Lair, and Sengkuni Merong. This research applied the qualitative approach using the case study design. The data collection techniques included content analysis, referring to Miles and Huberman’s model, which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The acceptability analysis was based on Nababan’s Translation Quality Assessment framework, while the error analysis utilized Dulay’s Surface Strategy Taxonomy, encompassing omission, addition, misformation, and misordering errors. The findings revealed 54 Omission errors, 25 addition errors, and 52 misformation errors in the translated scripts. No misordering errors were identified. Errors in omission and misformation accounted for the highest percentages, highlighting significant challenges in maintaining grammatical accuracy and proper sentence structure. The acceptability analysis categorized 54 data points as "acceptable," 84 as "less acceptable," and 44 as "not acceptable." The study concludes that enhancing students’ grammatical competence and understanding of the socio-cultural context in translation is essential for improving the acceptability of translated Wayang Orang scripts.
